Every authorโ€™s journey is different. In this candid and inspiring panel, authors will share their unique paths to publication from idea to finished book, how they navigated through the maze of agents and queries, revisions and rejections, choosing between traditional and self-publishing, etc. This panel offers valuable insights, honest advice and motivation to help authors forge their own path to publication.

Bios:

Lorraine Avila, a Bronxite with Dominican roots, is the author of The Making of Yolanda La Bruja, Malcriada and Other Stories and Celestial Summer. Her YA debut, The Making of Yolanda, was voted one of 2023โ€™s Best Books for Teens by NY Public Library. Lorraine is a seasoned literacy educator and has taught writing workshops at schools and organizations like NYU, Brown University, Stanford University, and more. Melissa Lozada-Oliva is a poet and author of Peluda: Poems, Dreaming of You, Candelaria, and Beyond All Reasonable Doubt, Jesus is Alive! Candelaria was named one of the best books of 2023 by Vogue and USA Today. Melissa teaches creative writing at Columbia University, the Redhook Public Library, and the Center for Fiction. Richie Narvaez is the award-winning author of two novels, Hipster Death Rattle and Holly Hernandez and the Death of Disco, as well as two short story collections, Roachkiller & Other Stories and most recently Noiryorican. His writing, which includes more than eighty published short stories, centers on Nuyorican and Latinx experiences, using multiple genres, including crime fiction, horror, literary, and speculative fiction. A recipient of a Letras Boricuas Fellowship, he teaches writing at Sarah Lawrence College and the Fashion Institute of Technology. His website is https://www.richienarvaez.com/.

Theresa Varela is the award-winning author of the Daisy Muรฑiz Urban Cozy Mystery Series and the Graciella la Gitana Oracleยฉ Deck. Her creative writings encompass the experiences of Latinx and LGBTQ+ people in the urban landscape. Theresa holds a PhD from New York University. She is a board member of the Sisters In Crime NY Tristate Chapter and member of Crime Writers of Color, Queer Crime Writers, and Mystery Writers of America. Her website is www.theresavarela.com.
