Job Description:

The Feminist Press is seeking a full-time Publicity and Events Coordinator. This position will work closely with the marketing team and the Executive Director and Publisher to promote the list, authors, and programming of a nonprofit intersectional feminist book publisher. The Publicity and Events Coordinator will be responsible for promoting Feminist Press’s frontlist titles as well as curating events for authors and the Press across the country. The ideal candidate is driven, passionate, and knowledgeable about the ever-evolving media landscape, feminist writing, and independent bookstores/publishers, with a proven track record in book publicity. This is an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively with a passionate team dedicated to serving the Press’s mission of publishing groundbreaking works of intersectional feminist literature.

This hybrid role requires at least two days per week of in-person work at the Feminist Press office at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan, New York.

Essential duties and responsibilities: Develop and execute publicity campaigns for 12–15 frontlist titles and authors annually, including literary fiction, nonfiction, translation, and anthologies.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with key media contacts across print, digital, and podcast/radio media, independent bookstores, and independent publishers to secure coverage for FP’s books (including interviews, reviews, and excerpt placements).

Write and distribute press releases and media pitches, as well as provide regular publicity updates to sales representatives.

Manage and maintain organized internal media databases and track publicity hits, providing updates to marketing and editorial teams on campaigns and their results.

Collaborate with marketing and editorial teams on vision and execution of publicity, events, and marketing initiatives.

Curate and plan FP literary events programming, including book tours, signings, regional book fairs and festivals, virtual events, classroom visits, and conference programming for authors and the Press.

Attend local Feminist Press book launches in New York City and represent the Press in a professional and positive manner at 2–3 annual conferences and festivals, such as Brooklyn Book Festival and the AWP Conference and Bookfair.

Oversee events budget and communicate details with both internal and external stakeholders, including FP authors, interlocutors, and event partners.

Maintain internal records and databases of events for grants reporting.

Oversee publicity- and events-related mailings, including galley mailing, book giveaways, and awards submissions and mailing.

Qualities for candidates: Widely read and familiar with current intersectional feminist conversations, writers, and thinkers.

Strong connections within the book publishing field, including journalists, podcast hosts, and other media professionals.

Demonstrated ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously while ensuring that work is done to a high standard and with great attention to detail.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate expectations and best practices and handle delicate author care situations with grace.

Experienced in pitching and presenting titles in an engaging manner at internal and external meetings, events, and conferences, as well as via digital communications.

Open to being a team player and pitching in across departments at a small nonprofit.

Approaches work with a spirit of curiosity, humility, and collaboration.

Skills/experience:

Required:

2 years working in publicity, ideally with books or in publishing.

Experience planning book tours and book events.

Strong ability to follow up on outreach, network, and make new contacts for the press.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to use Dropbox, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office.

Nice to have:

Comfort designing basic graphics in Canva/Photoshop

Experience in independent publishing world

Familiarity with Ingram Content Group platforms (iPage, CoreSource)

Record of fostering careers of debut and international authors

Comfort with public speaking, including moderating events or panels

Book club experience with bookstores, librarians, or other community/interest groups

Experience working with book influencers

Interest in feminist theory, gender studies, or feminist activism

Compensation for this full-time role is $50,000–55,000, commensurate with experience.
